Boris tells Trump that Sacoolas must return as Harry Dunn's family continue fight for justice

Prime Minister Boris Johnson told US President Donald Trump of the need for Anne Sacoolas to return to the UK as Harry Dunn's family continue their campaign for justice.

The world leaders spoke on the phone after the United States rejected the Home Office's extradition application so the woman charged with causing the Northamptonshire teenager's death can be tried.

Harry's mother Charlotte Charles said they will wait until Mr Trump is out of office if need be as they believe the whole system of diplomatic immunity needs to change.

"This has become so much larger now than Harry. He is our number one, he is our focus, he is what's driving this whole campaign on," she told The Victoria Derbyshire Show.

"But the amount of support that we've got from the UK and the US and various other parts of the world is immense.

"This is about protecting any of the UK citizens from it happening to them so the whole thing needs to be reviewed and we won't rest until it has."

Harry, 19, died in hospital after the crash with Sacoolas' car, which was on the wrong side of the road, outside Croughton in August.

She left the UK claiming diplomatic immunity as her husband worked at RAF Croughton, which is used by the US Air Force, and the American government refuses to send her back, despite being charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Mr Johnson raised Harry Dunn's 'tragic case' and the need to secure justice for his family with Mr Trump over the phone, a spokesman for the PM said.

"He reiterated the need for the individual involved to return to the UK," they added.

The family's spokesman Radd Seiger said Sacoolas could be tried in her absence if she remains in the US.

They are all due to meet Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab later today (Monday, January 27) ahead of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's visit to London later this week.

"Harry Dunn's parents and I are looking forward to seeing Dominic Raab at the FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) tomorrow at 4.45pm," he tweeted yesterday.

"It is important that the UK Government and Team Harry are on the same page in advance of Pompeo's visit to London on Wednesday and I am sure our talks will be constructive and productive."
