A spokesman for Northants Police said: "We deployed and tracked the man to nearby Oxford Street where he was searched.

"The 'handgun' was actually an imitation firearm with no capability to cause harm but the man, aged 26, was arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear.

"We hope this shows the community that although this didn’t turn out to be a real firearms incident, that Northants Police are ready and equipped to deal with these types of incidents quickly and efficiently, in order to keep people safe."
