A spokesperson said: "Absolutely disgusted today. We often place our witness appeal boards at the scene of collisions. 24 hrs after putting them out we have returned to the scene of this #fatal collision to find someone has thrown them into the ditch! How would you feel if it was your loved one?"

Responding to a question about whether officers tie the signs down, the spokesperson said: "Where we can we secure, sometimes there is nothing to secure them to sadly. We've had numerous stolen over the years which is just beyond me."

The incident was widely condemned by social media users.

"Unfortunately this is the society we live in today, dreadful the way people behave and to what end it could happen to a family member of the individual who decided to throw the signs in the ditch, then I wonder how they would react. Sad people out there," one said.

Another added: "What is wrong with people? How would they feel if it was their family involved and you were asking for information? I despair. As if your job is not hard enough."
