Kettering is currently the only borough in the county where parking is dealt with by police rather than council wardens.

Cllr Mick Scrimshaw (Lab, William Knibb) has given the news a cautious welcome.

He said: “I am pleased that a decision has been taken as it’s dragged on for so long.

“The police are unable to do it but I would have preferred it to be Kettering Council to take control.

“They already employ wardens to tackle issues such as dog mess and flytipping.

“I am concerned that because the county council are based in Northampton they will spend a lot of their time travelling to and from Kettering.

“How good will it be? I’m sure it will be better than the police doing it but I’m not convinced.

“However, it’s good news that people will have enforcement.”

There has been no official confirmation of when the enforcement would come in if approved but the Northants Telegraph understands that it could be as early as June.

A Northamptonshire County Council spokesman said: “An application has been submitted to the Department for Transport for the county council to take on responsibility for on-street parking in Kettering.

“We are currently awaiting the outcome of this application.
