Council gives away compost

MORE than 450 people collected bags of free compost from East Northamptonshire Council at the weekend.

The council ran the offer to reward residents who are already using the garden waste service, and to promote the benefits of the scheme to others.

Waste manager Charlotte Tompkins said: “We shifted 15 tonnes of compost over two days which just goes to show how many green fingered residents we have in the district.

“It was a great opportunity to talk to people about what happens to our green waste and explain just how easy our garden waste service is to use. For £50 a year, you get a wheeled bin which we collect from your kerbside and empty every fortnight and you can sign up online.”

Cllr Glenn Harwood, waste and recycling working party chairman, added: “This giveaway brought the two together which all helps to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. We hope even more residents will join our garden waste service.”
