Cost of prisoners

THE amount of money it costs to keep prisoners in jail has been revealed.

At Northamptonshire’s only prison, HMP Wellingborough, it costs the Government £34,251 per prisoner per year.

The prison, known as a Male Category C establishment, has room for 638 inmates but an average of just 520 in the building at any one time.

Those empty spaces mean that, although the cost per place in the prison if full would be £27,898, the cost per prisoner is higher.

The figures, provided by the Ministry of Justice, concern the cost of keeping prisoners in jail for the 2010-11 financial year.
