Both clubs are without a win in the Premier Division so far this season this season but both made progress through their first-round ties on a busy night of action in the knockout competition.

Dean Hall grabbed the only goal of the game as Whitworth beat Division One outfit Sileby Rangers at London Road.

And Corinthians held their nerve from the penalty spot to book their place in the second round.

They drew 2-2 at Division One side Birstall United and then won the resulting shoot-out 5-4.

Both clubs will now be hoping to register their first league wins of the season this weekend with Whitworth entertaining Harborough Town while Corinthians have a local derby against Wellingborough Town at Sergeants Lawn.

The Doughboys were also victorious on Tuesday as they saw off Irchester United 3-1.

Debutants Shaun Wilkes and Jamie Lea were both on target for Wellingborough with Jeremiah Adams grabbing the other goal while Nathan Heycock replied for the Romans.

Desborough Town fell at the first hurdle of the competition, however, as they went down 3-0 at Daventry Town.

The post-Bob Warby era at Raunds Town started with a penalty shoot-out defeat at local rivals Thrapston Town after the teams had shared a 1-1 draw.

Warby, who had taken over at Kiln Park during the summer, left the club last week and the Shopmates’ first game under the caretaker team of Mark Page and Tom Beach saw them hold Thrapston before the hosts triumphed 7-6 on spot-kicks.

Raunds are now welcoming applications for a new first-team manager. The closing date is October 12 and anyone interested should email to [email protected]

Rushden & Higham United also suffered penalty shoot-out heartbreak against Premier Division outfit Eynesbury Rovers.

The Lankies produced an impressive display to hold the top-flight high-flyers to a 1-1 draw but it was the hosts who went through 4-3 in the shoot-out.
