Corby students win medals at disability sport finals

The students took park in the Panathlon Central and South Region Multisport Final on Tuesday at Stoke Mandeville Stadium.

They won bronze medals with 44 points after competing in a variety of specially-adapted sports and had a ‘brilliant day out’.

Corby Business Academy won silver medals in the table cricket, new age kurling, polybat and racing events.

Teacher Janice Hingley said: “Panathlon is an incomparable opportunity for all to do a physical activity and have a social experience.

“We are a mainstream school and everyone does PE.

“They benefit from working in a team and supporting each other.”

Student Ronan, 17, won an individual silver medal in the standing long jump.

He said: “I’m good at that. It’s my best sport.”

Each year Panathlon provides more than 10,000 young disabled people with opportunities to engage in competitive sport that they are so often denied elsewhere.

Panathlon’s chief operating officer, Tony Waymouth said: “It is great to be back in Stoke Mandeville with such large numbers of competitors.

“The regional multi-sport final again offers an opportunity for counties to test themselves against other successful and achieving peers and the Primary Panathlon provides an opportunity for the young ones to see what they can achieve in the future.”
