Corby’s very own Big Fat Gypsy Wedding was screened last night (Monday, February 11) showing travellers Danielle and her boyfriend Brendan tying the knot.
The Channel 4 one-off Valentine’s special featured the marriage at Our Lady’s Church, Occupation Road, which attracted hundreds of residents who turned out to wish the young couple well.
The show featured Danielle, who had to wait until the day after her 16th birthday last May to get married, preparing for the big day and groom Brendan, 21, who was preparing himself for a possible three-month jail sentence.
Danielle was filmed in a Corby beauty saloon and her groom was seen on his stag do – a hunting expedition in woodland near Corby. His view of marriage was slightly less than romantic. He said: “A girl is good for three things, cleaning, cooking and kissing.”
On the wedding day the bride left the travellers’ site, off Gretton Brook Road, in a stretch limo and arrived at the church to the sounds of cheers and a few choruses of Happy Birthday To You from the waiting crowds.
After the ceremony the happy couple and close relatives enjoyed a reception at the Open Hearth pub in Studfall Avenue. Corby, and the newly-weds later moved to Leicester.
There was even a happy ending for the couple when Brendan escaped jail and was given a suspended prison sentence.
