Corby fishing match in memory of boating lake's Barry raises funds for Lakelands

A total of Â£200 raised at the Barry Scholes Memorial Shield event in Corby has been handed over to the Lakelands Hospice

Last summer, Corby Borough Council held a fishing competition in memory of Barry Scholes at the Corby Boating Lake.

Barry, who sadly passed away in 2013 following a short period of illness, was one of the popular faces of Corby, particularly at the boating lake where he took over the cafe in 2006. As well as being the welcoming face of the Boating Lake, Barry was also involved in a number of community and fund raising activities.

An organiser of regular charity fishing matches, Barry, supported events such as the annual bonfire night and championed the wildlife and environment surrounding the Boating Lake.

Last July, the Barry Scholes Memorial Shield was held in his honour and the £200 raised has now been donated to Lakelands Hospice.

A total of 20 anglers took part to raise with the winning catch being netted by Rob Coleman with a massive 21lb 3oz fish.

Corby Borough Council’s Lead Member for Community, Cllr John McGhee, said: “Thank you to all who took part and to the winners.”
