HUNDREDS of keen gardeners were given a Springtime treat at a special event organised by East Northamptonshire Council.

More than 450 residents turned up at the council’s headquarters in Thrapston on Friday and Saturday to collect bags of free compost and speak to officers about recycling, composting and the council’s garden waste service.

Waste manager Charlotte Tompkins said: “We shifted 15 tonnes of compost over two days which just goes to show how many green fingered residents we have.

“It was a great opportunity to talk to people about what happens to our green waste and explain just how easy our garden waste service is to use. For £50 a year, you get a wheeled bin which we collect from your kerbside and empty every fortnight.”

Waste and recycling working party chairman Cllr Glenn Harwood MBE added: “People in East Northamptonshire are great supporters of recycling and love their gardening. This giveaway brought the two together which all helps to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.”
