A series of events have been taking place in Desborough throughout November, which is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

Kelmarsh Hall was among those taking part in Pancreatic Cancer Action’s Turn It Purple campaign to raise awareness of the cancer, which is the UK’s fifth biggest cancer killer, by shining purple on November 1.

St Giles Church has also been lit up purple to raise awareness within the community.

Desborough Library and Desborough Surgery have displays to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer, with staff at Mark Churcher Goldsmiths and Desborough Opticians decorating their windows purple.

A number of events took place on November 17 to coincide with World Pancreatic Cancer Day, including staff at Cafe Revive dressing in purple and dressing their window in purple throughout the week.

Staff at Sanctuary of Beauty also dressed in purple on November 17 and turned their window purple.

Others who have got involved are members of the knitting groups at Bella Knit in Corby who have knitted and donated pansies for the displays.

Ann Churcher from Mark Churcher Goldsmiths, who is a volunteer with Pancreatic Cancer Action, said: “We are so thankful to everyone who has given their support and hope that this will grow each year and kick-start conversations to raise awareness of this disease.”

And there is still time to get involved as Desborough Leisure Centre is holding a special purple pilates class on Sunday (November 27).

Staff members are providing instruction free of charge, but people will be asked to make a donation of £5 to take part to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer Action.

To book your place contact Verna on 07514 691050 or Ann on 07752 132587.

More than 9,000 people are newly diagnosed a year with pancreatic cancer.
