Clean for the Queen in Kettering, Wellingborough and East Carlton

Volunteers have been cleaning for the Queen ahead of the monarch's 90th birthday.

The Rotary Club of Kettering Tresham organised the clean-up which started at 10am on Saturday, March 5, at Mill Road Park.

Kettering Council provided the litter-picker equipment.

Volunteers spent two hours covering the park and surrounding streets all the way to up Windmill Avenue, Tennyson Road and out to Stamford Road.

A club spokesman said: “We had 30 volunteers and collected more than 30 bags of rubbish.

“Our volunteers included Kettering Tresham Rotary Club, Kettering Rotary Club, Kettering Rotaract Club, High Street McDonald’s employees, Cllrs Mick Scrimshaw and Keli Watts and residents, along with two little boys learning young about not to be a litter bug!

“Throughout our street collecting we had residents talk to us and there was a real sense of community spirit.

“They acknowledged us, smiled and talked to us.

“Happy birthday to the Queen and let’s hope it encourages more people to get involved in community events and have pride in their community.”

The following day Cadets from 422 (Corby) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets also took part in the Clean for The Queen campaign.

Working alongside Corby Council, the staff and cadets made their way around the 100-acre site at East Carlton Country park picking up any litter they could find.

Showing great teamwork, the cadets and staff cleared the park in less than two hours, with the strangest find of the day being a broadband installation CD.

The council was grateful for the cadets’ help and look forward to seeing them back on Saturday, March 19, for the 75th anniversary tree-planting event.

The squadron is holding an open day from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, April 2, at the squadron headquarters in St Mark’s Road for any 12 to 16-year-olds who are interested in becoming a Royal Air Force Air Cadet.

People living on the Queensway estate in Wellingborough also got in on the act with a clean-up on Saturday.

Cllr Elizabeth Coombe encouraged people to join her at Glamis Hall from where they moved down to Henshaw Road.

Members of Wellingborough police cadets also took part.
