Chris taking to the waves in fearsome sailing race

The deputy managing director of a Higham Ferrers-based engineering consultancy is taking on a fearsome sailing challenge to raise money for a charity which helped his a colleague's son after a serious car accident.

Chris Evans, of the Rolton Group, is raising money for the Central England Rehabilitation Centre and will compete in the Rolex Fastnet Challenge in August, considered one of the classic offshore races on the international sailing calendar.

Peter Rolton, chairman of the Rolton Group, has a son who is currently being treated at the centre following a car accident last year – a misfortune that hit close to home for Chris, whose son also suffered a serious head injury that resulted in a bleed on the brain in a footballing accident four years ago.

The five day racing challenge will see him set sail from Cowes on the Isle of Wight on August 6, taking in the infamous Fastnet Rock off Ireland before passing the Scilly Isles, and finishing in Plymouth.

The course, over 600 nautical miles, encounters some of the most demanding and treacherous weather and sea conditions. The challenge requires experienced race goers to have successfully completed a range of rigorous safety checks before embarking and Chris has three races planned to assist him in his training.

He has set a fundraising target of £5,000.

Chris added: “I’ll be working hard in the gym and out on the water to prepare with over 150 hours of training over the coming months.”
