The Environment Agency has issue a red warning to users of Cogenhoe Mill caravan park after heavy rainfall caused the River Nene to rise 15 centimetres higher than its flood risk level.

A spokesperson for the agency said, with more unsettled weather is forecast over the next few days, rising river levels “are expected to cause flooding to low lying land and roads.”

Squalling winds are set to continue throughout today, with gusts reaching up to 45mph in Northampton and up to 60mph in parts of Northamptonshire.

A flood alert is also in place for the River Avon, just south of Swinford in the north of the county and at Thrapston, which also sits on the banks of the Nene.

At-risk areas in the county, which the Nene river runs through, or alongside, include Earls Barton, Wollaston, Little Irchester, Irthlingborough, Little Addington, Thrapston and Oundle.

An alert has also been issued for the Upper Ouse, which runs through Silverstone, Towcester and Stoke Bruerne.

At Cogenhoe, flooding is possible when the Nene reaches 0.61 metres, but the latest readings from 6am today have placed the river at 0.75 metres.
