A new day centre is hoping to reach out to elderly and vulnerable people in its community.

Cando Care was launched after families who were affected by the closure of Serve’s two day centres in Rushden and Higham Ferrers made an appeal for help finding somewhere new for their loved ones to go.

The day centre held its official opening earlier this month, with guests including MP for Corby and East Northants Andy Sawford and Pauline Williams, who was performing her last official duty as Raunds mayor.

It will be open five days a week at Saxon Hall in Raunds and it is run by Jilly Carter and Kathleen Meredith, who are both qualified carers, with the help of their team of volunteers.

Mrs Carter, who used to work at Serve’s Ron Manning Centre in Higham Ferrers, said: “Kathleen and I have been working in the care industry for years.

“When the two day centres closed, the families were distraught and said what can we do.

“We looked around for alternatives and found there wasn’t much out there so we decided to open Cando.

“What we are trying to be is a person-centred day centre.”

Cando Care is a co-operative CIC (community interest company).

As it is a not-for-profit organisation, money from any fundraising the centre does will go back into providing activities for the clients, either by taking them out or getting entertainment in for them.

Activities already on offer there include chair Zumba, chair yoga, bingo, games and quizzes.

Mrs Carter said: “Primarily we are for the elderly because usually it’s the elderly who can’t get out but it is anyone who is vulnerable.

“The day centre is really needed.

“The families were desperate for somewhere for their relatives to go for some respite.

“These people have given a lot to us and it’s time for us to give something back.”

Jilly and Kathleen, who are the only paid members of Cando staff, said: “We are loving it.

“Every day we leave this building and say we love our jobs.”

But Mrs Carter added: “We rely on volunteers, we couldn’t do it without them.”

The day centre is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 2.30pm at Saxon Hall in Raunds.

During the school holidays when Saxon Hall is unavailable, the day centre will be at Manor School in the town.

The cost for a day is £25, including a hot meal which is provided by Manor School or Savour The Flavour in Higham Ferrers.
