Call for boycott of workfare schemes

Corby Council is to be asked to boycott Government schemes which require jobseekers to do unpaid work, or risk losing their benefits.

A motion, proposed by Cllr Sean Kettle and seconded by Cllr Peter Petch, will be debated at a full meeting of the borough council on Thursday, August 21.

It states: “This council believes that work should pay and therefore opposes the introduction of schemes which force job seekers
into unpaid work or face losing their benefits – schemes known popularly as workfare.”

It calls for a council ban on workfare placements.
