BRIDGE WATCH DAY 14: A look back at our campaign
Bridge Watch was launched on October 1 after reporters had spent months following the story of the closed Cottingham Road rail bridge.
Our campaign was designed to put pressure on Network Rail to ensure they opened the vital bridge on time to help long-suffering businesses and residents of the Old Village who told us they were suffering because of the bridge closure.
Backed by Corby’s prospective parliamentary candidate Beth Miller, we vowed to do a story a day, every day, until the bridge reopened.
We’d heard how the Old Village had become like a ghost town since the bridge had been closed and how shops were losing money.
We were asked by shopkeepers to help them fight for compensation to help them get through the next tough few months.
Old people told us they were being forced to take taxis around the diversion.
A landlord told us that takings at some businesses were down more than 50 per cent.
And we were there when a packed public meeting heard stories from local people who were angry about the extended closure of the bridge.
The landlord at the White Hart told us he’d lost £47,000 since the bridge had been closed.
And we’ll be there on Friday, when the bridge is due to reopen.
