Applications were received from more than 7,700 pupils, which is 500, or seven per cent, more than last year.

Ninety-five per cent of families have been allocated a place at one of their preferred schools, including 80 per cent who have been offered a place at their first preference school.

It means around 400 pupils will not get to go to a preferred school, as the school-age population continues to grow rapidly in Northamptonshire.

Northamptonshire County Council will post letters today telling parents which school they have been offered, while the 93 per cent of families who applied online can check their offer on the council’s website today at www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/admissions.

Councillor Matthew Golby, county council cabinet member for learning, skills and education, said: “This year we have been able to offer parents more choice than ever before, with two new free schools opening in Northampton in time for this September.

“We know that we will need to provide an additional 9,000 secondary school places in Northamptonshire over the next five years. With this ever increasing number of children requiring a school place, it is no small task for our allocations team to meet parental preference.

“But I am pleased that once again almost all families have been offered at place at one of their preferred secondary schools.”

Any families who are unhappy with the place they have been allocated can appeal through the independent appeals process.

Late applications for a secondary school place will be allocated on April 14, May 9, June 6 and July 4.

Primary school allocations will be announced on April 18.
