The World Conker Championships have been cancelled for a second year in a row, dealing a blow for good causes in the area.

The annual competition, which raises funds for charities supporting the blind and visually impaired, is held by the Ashton Conker Club, near Oundle.

However, organisers have failed to find a venue for this year’s event compounding last year’s disappointment when the contest had to be cancelled on health and safety grounds due to high winds.

In a statement on its website, the club said: “The organisers of the competition have been unable to find a venue for the 2012 World Conker Championships and so with great sadness we have been forced to cancel the event.”

Since it began in 1965 more than £400,000 has been raised for charity, with £21,000 raised in 2010 alone.

More than 300 competitors were expected to take part in this year’s championship and organisers have said all of this year’s entrants will be transferred to 2013’s event.

One event which will be taking place however is the Orlingbury Unofficial Conker Happening 2012 which takes place on Orlingbury Village Green on Sunday, October 14. Registration is from 1.30pm and play commences at 2pm. Cost is £1 per entrant with Norty’s licensed bar providing the refreshments. Entry forms from Andy on 01933 402852 or visit
