Allergen found in children’s meals

GLUTEN has been found in some primary school meals labelled as free from the substance.

Caterers at county primary schools have now been told by Northamptonshire County Council not to serve the shepherds pie and beef bolognese to gluten-sensitive children.

Cllr Andrew Grant, council cabinet member for children, learning and skills, said an investigation had been launched, adding: “Our nutritionists regularly monitor the food we provide and they picked up the discrepancy. It is completely unacceptable for a child with allergies to be exposed to this risk.”

Of the 14,000 pupils who receive the council’s Nourish school meals service every day, 20 require gluten-free food. Any parent with concerns should call 01604 368736.
