Northamptonshire County Council has issued advice to people looking to improve their home after reports of a builder in Corby taking money for a job and then disappearing without carrying out the work.

A social media post suggested that a builder asked a pensioner for £360 for materials to lay slabs in her back garden in June.

After giving her a hand-written receipt, he then allegedly disappeared and has not responded to numerous attempts to contact him since.

Anybody who feels they have been the victim of a rogue trader should contact trading standards on 0300 126 1000.

A Northamptonshire County Council spokesman said: “The advice of the police and trading standards is not to buy goods or services from a cold caller on your doorstep.

“If you do need work carried out around your home or garden, trading standards operates an approved trader scheme called Buy With Confidence.

“You can find details of trading standards approved traders at www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/approvedtraders or by calling 0300 126 1000.

“If you are concerned about a caller at your door or suspect that rogue doorstep traders or distraction burglars are operating in you community, please contact the dedicated Doorstep crime Action Network (DAN) number 0345 23 07 702.”
