A traffic regulation has been approved for Clay Lane in Earls Barton in a bid to stop the problem of people dumping rubbish there instead of disposing of it responsibly.

Police say the action, which will see the lane gated, is a last resort but was necessary due to the high volumes of fly-tipping incidents there.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: “We worked closely with Earls Barton Parish Council to introduce a traffic regulation order which will allow the entrance to Clay Lane to be gated.

“The area had suffered from high volumes of fly-tipping and we received many complaints from residents about the problem.

“Applying for the order was a last resort, but we felt we had to use it as the problem with fly-tipping was getting worse.

“Consultation took place with partner agencies and nearby land owners and all were in support of the order.

“Despite the change in the status of Clay Lane, it will still be accessible for members of Ecton Lakes and land owners.”

The traffic order has been welcomed by Earls Barton Parish Council, which recently tweeted: “Roll on March when the traffic regulation order is in place and we can finally put a stop to this! #nomoreflytipping”
