7.30pm UPDATE: Man in critical condition after lift shaft fall at Kettering shopping centre

A man is in a critical condition after falling up to 20ft down a lift shaft at the Newlands Centre in Kettering.

The man was rescued from the lift shaft by firefighters before being treated at the scene by paramedics.

He was then airlifted to hospital in Coventry this afternoon, where his condition has been described as critical.

Emergency services were called to the shopping centre at about 2.45pm after the man, believed to be a contractor working there, fell from the first floor of the lift shaft.

The shopping centre was closed to shoppers following the incident, but centre bosses have said it should be open as normal tomorrow.

See tomorrow’s Evening Telegraph for the full story and pictures from the scene.
