A best-selling author who wrote about completing 50 tasks before turning 50 has put the wheels in motion for a new challenge.
Author of The 50 List Nigel Holland will be riding a hand-cycle 80 miles from Silverstone Race Circuit, to Rockingham Circuit and finishing off at Santa Pod Raceway.
But it won’t be easy as Mr Holland, 51, of Wellingborough, has Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT), a neurological condition which affects the hands and feet.
The condition results in wastage of the muscles in the lower part of the arms and legs because the nerves do not tell the muscles what to do. The muscles are fine but waste away if they do not get any signal from the nerves.
His inspiration comes from his youngest daughter, Ellie, 11, who also has CMT.
He wants to show her the condition doesn’t stop you from doing what you want to do in life, as well as raise £10,000 for CMT UK.
He said: “After working through the 50 list in 2012 I decided that 2013 was going to be a year where I would take it easy, not get involved in too many crazy activities and concentrate on my business.
“However, a week into 2014 and I was keen to take on another challenge.
“I’ve always liked the idea of riding a hand-cycle ever since watching the Paralympics, and because of my love of motorsport, I came up with the Track to Track idea.”
The latest challenge has had support from the race venues and businesses including Wellingborough Cycles, Get Embroidered, Draft Wheelchairs and Paule Foote Ink. Bradley Wiggins has also tweeted about it.
