The Masque Theatre presents Playhouse Creatures from Tuesday April 4 to Saturday April 8 at Northampton's Playhouse Theatre.

The year is 1669. The theatres have recently re-opened and King Charles the Second, following his return from exile in France, has a yearning to see actresses upon the English

stage. It appears he’s not alone…

April de Angelis' play traces the rise and fall of some of the first English actresses, including the infamous Nell Gwyn, as they navigate the triumphs and pitfalls of becoming Playhouse Creatures - doyennes of the acting world, in equal parts wooed and hounded by adoring men.

This attention opens up opportunities beyond their wildest dreams but their position is on a knife edge, alongside their reputations.

Masque's production explores the contrast of the actresses everyday lives with their onstage persona by presenting the performance scenes in the Restoration style.

The show starts at 7.30pm, bar open from 7pm.

Tickets are £9 for adults or £8 for concessions. and can be booked on 07586 288793, or in person from St Giles

Music, St Giles Terrace, or on-line at www.masquetheatre.co.uk, or on the door each night from 7pm.
