A Wellingborough home improvement firm says new planning laws are good news for homeowners.

New extensions will be fast-tracked as part of changes to the planning laws, which Adrian Timbers, sales and marketing manager of T&K Home Improvements in Wellingborough, says will be welcomed by Northamptonshire homeowners.

The new laws, which were announced by Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Robert Jenrick, come into force from September and, while applicants must continue to consider the impact on their neighbours, will speed up the process of approving extensions.

With the relaxation of planning laws to allow attached houses an extension up to six metres and detached houses one up to eight coming into force last year, the news will make extensions such as conservatories, glass extensions and orangeries even more attractive.

Adrian said: “The new laws are good news for homeowners who want a conservatory or orangery but have been put off in the past with the usual one-two month wait for councils to say yes.

“The need for extra space has been highlighted for many over the last four months and fast-tracking extensions will make it easier for homeowners to get the dream extension they want and the extra living space.”

With many gaining a new appreciation of their homes during lockdown, there has been a real home improvement boom since things started to relax which is great news for the local economy.

Adrian added: “The new extension laws are another example that home improvements are a big part of the government’s economic recovery plans to boost spending on homes and give local businesses a lift.

“And with planning and building regs not applying to most garden outbuildings such as home offices, in most instances, it’s the perfect time for homeowners to take advantage.”

T&K recently added garden rooms to its range of home improvement products, and they are pre-assembled and transported already built for fast and easy installation.
