Analysts collate information on patients who have died in hospitals in England and either tested positive for Covid-19 or the virus is mentioned on a death certificate.

Today's sad news takes the total to 19 deaths among coronavirus patients in Northamptonshire's two main hospitals — 11 at Northampton and eight at Kettering General Hospital — during the 'second wave' of the pandemic.

Covid-19 was already linked to 311 deaths in Northampton and 220 in Kettering between March and August.

People will be told to only leave home when they really need to from midnight tonight. Non-essential retailers must close while pubs and restaurants can only operate as takeaways until at least December 2 as the country battles a sharp rise in coronavirus cases.

Scientists fear the 'second wave' will spark an increase in patients needing treatment in hospital which could overwhelm the health service.

NHS England will move to its highest alert level from midnight tonight. Its chief executive, Sir Simon Stevens, said the move to level four was in response to a "serious situation ahead" amid a rise in coronavirus patients needing intensive care.

A further 131 lab-confirmed positive Covid-19 tests were confirmed in Northamptonshire during the latest 24-hour reporting period. Government figures also revealed nearly 1,100 new cases in the last week.

Northampton remains the area with the highest current rate of infection among the county's seven districts and boroughs, although East Northamptonshire has seen sharp rises centred around the Oundle area during the last week.

Data analysts convert figures into a weekly average of new positives tests assuming each area has a population of 100,000.

Current rates of new positive tests per 100,000 of population per week for boroughs and districts in the county are: Northamptonshire 145.9; Northampton 184.8; East Northants 176.7: Wellingborough 140.5; South Northants 138.6; Daventry 123.3; Kettering 91.4; Corby 91.4.
