Northamptonshire's over-70s still waiting for Covid-19 jabs have been told to call the NHS to arrange their vaccinations.

Health chiefs have switched away from the previous policy of telling those eligible for a vaccination shot to wait to be offered a jab as they bid to reach the Government's target of 15million doses by this weekend.

Around 135,000 in the first four priority groups — over-80s, over-75s, over-70s and healthcare workers — can get the jab in Northamptonshire and latest figures from January showed more than 96,000 people in the county had already received at least their first dose.

Those who have still not had their jab and want one can go online or call 119 to book a slot at Northamptonshire's vaccination centre or one of the local hubs set up across the county.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said last night: “So far we have said please wait until the NHS contacts you. I now urge everyone aged 70 and over who hasn’t yet had a vaccination to come forward and contact the NHS to book in their jab.

“And if you have grandparents, relatives and friends over 70, please encourage them to book an appointment as soon as possible, so they can be protected against this awful virus."

Northamptonshire's mass vaccination centre at Moulton Park opened just over a fortnight ago and is delivering nearly 1,500 jabs a day.
