Some bus drivers have tested positive for Covid-19 after an outbreak at Stagecoach's Kettering depot, it is understood.

The firm, which operates most bus routes in Northamptonshire, has confirmed a 'small number of employees' are now self-isolating, with the cases reported to the county's public health department.

A spokesman for Stagecoach Midlands said all staff are adhering to government guidance - but declined to comment further when asked about claims seven employees at the Northampton Road depot had tested positive, including three bus drivers.

The spokesman said: "The safety and well-being of our employees and customers is our first priority and we have strict protocols in place around the management of Covid-19.

"We have a small number of employees from Kettering depot who are now self-isolating in line with government guidance.

“All staff are adhering to social distancing and wearing face coverings whilst in the depot and other workplaces. In addition, whilst at work, all drivers are in a sealed personal cab with no contact with members of the public.

"We will continue to follow all of the government and health organisation rules and guidance in place as well as working with our local public health team to manage the virus."

It's understood officials from the county's public health team have carried out a risk assessment at the depot after the outbreak.

It's also understood Stagecoach has been told that they do not need to carry out widespread testing on staff.

Trade union Unite, which represents the majority of Stagecoach employees and about 90 per cent of the UK's local service bus workers, has been contacted for comment.
