Northampton NHS staff have released a heart-warming video of a Covid-19 patient finally leaving intensive care after 37 days battling the virus.

The patient, named only as Nur, is clapped all the way out of Northampton General Hospital's High Dependency Unit by the doctors and nurses at Northampton General Hospital who helped him through.

But that wonderful news came with a stark reminder that Northamptonshire is not out of the woods yet as far as the crisis is concerned as a further 12 coronavirus deaths were confirmed durng a five-day spell at the Cliftonville site.

An NGH spokesman tweeted: "Yesterday, we clapped for Nur after spending 37 days on HDU after contracting Covid-19.

"We wish Nur all of the best as he continues to recover here at NGH. Thank you to all of the staff who have cared for him throughout his time in hospital."

NHS England revealed seven of the most recent 12 deaths were recorded on Sunday at NGH among patients who tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days or had Covid-19 mentioned on a death certificate.

Staff at NGH has now seen a total of 634 coronavirus patients die since the start of the pandemic nearly 11 months ago — including 160 since January 1.

Another 448 deaths have been recorded at Kettering General Hospital with 126 of those having occurried this year.

Simon Weldon, the chief executive of Northampton General Hospital and Kettering General Hospital Group, said: “Every death is a tragedy and I would like to, once again, offer my condolences to all the families of patients who have died while in our care."
