Coronavirus deaths at KGH finally appear to be slowing down after two months of steady increases.

There have been 213 deaths involving Covid-19 at KGH and the total had been rising steadily over April and May with no sign of slowing down. In those two months, 174 people died at KGH.

However, since mid June the number of deaths being reported at KGH has dropped significantly and a graph showing the total number of coronavirus deaths at the hospital has almost flatlined.

KGH's worst week was between March 30 and April 5 when 26 people sadly lost their lives. Unlike the national picture of decline, the death toll at KGH remained high with more than 20 deaths a week throughout April and between 16 and 18 deaths a week in May.

The devastating loss of life has finally started to slow down this month and the weekly death toll has not risen above 12. In the last two weeks, just four deaths have been confirmed.

At NGH, there have been 291 deaths from coronavirus. NGH suffered a much higher weekly death toll than KGH at its peak, with 48 deaths in the week ending April 12.

NGH continues to record more deaths than KGH but also appears to be plateauing in recent days.

KGH continues to treat coronavirus patients and internal figures sent to staff show three patients were being treating in the ITU as of 8am yesterday (June 29).

The figures also show 633 KGH patients have tested positive for Covid-19 and a total of 258 Covid-19 patients have been discharged.

Northamptonshire's hospitals had been confirming some of the highest death tolls in the country in recent weeks, so news of a decline is welcome news.

The news also comes as nearby Leicester has been put under a localised lockdown due to a dramatic increase in new coronavirus cases.

Northamptonshire has confirmed 1,689 cases of Covid-19. In the north of the county there are 130 cases in Corby, 218 in East Northamptonshire, 263 in Kettering and 173 in Wellingborough.

The county's director of public health has been reminding residents that the risk of Covid-19 remains significant and localised outbreaks are a possibility.

Lucy Wightman said: "Whilst there are increasing signs of normality returning, we must remember that the virus continues to be in circulation and the risk posed by local outbreaks remains significant."

Lucy Wightman added: "It is important that we all recognise that regular and thorough hand washing, maintaining distance from others and wearing face coverings where appropriate, are all part of keeping us safe while the Coronavirus is in circulation.

"The ‘new normal’ means that these measures should remain part of our everyday lives until such time as we are able to find a vaccine."
