A Northamptonshire charity that helps older people is introducing a new way of doing things inspired by how they had to adapt during lockdown.

Age UK Northamptonshire had to change the way it reached clients due to social distancing and shielding, so introduced a number of services such as hot meal and prescription deliveries.

Now the charity will continue some of these services and is adding more that support local people in their own homes, despite the easing of lockdown.

The new service will respond to client requests, as well as providing companionship and a variety of activities.

Chris Duff, Age UK Northamptonshire’s Chief Executive, said: “Social distancing requires that support and we’ll need to be organised around small groups of clients in future.

“We will be doing everything we can to provide support to our clients who need it at this difficult time, individually in their homes or in small groups.

“We will be building up our provision, new and existing, as fast as we can to meet the needs of clients and keep them safe.”

The charity, which supports 15,000 older people locally, had to close its day centres during lockdown, but is now looking to reopen Northampton’s Venton Centre with a reduced capacity, before extending to day centres across the county.

Online exercise classes will also continue under the new service and sitting services for carers will be reintroduced.

Age UK Northamptonshire hopes to launch the new service in September, more information about which will be available on the charity’s website or by calling 01604 611200.
