In the north of the county, Bishop Stopford School, Southfield School and Hall Meadow in Kettering are closed as well as Friars Academy in Wellingborough.

Roade Primary School tweeted: "We’ve made the decision to not open to key workers' and vulnerable children today. The site, paths and some of the roads are too dangerous for staff and families to travel to and use. It’s not nice puffy snow, it’s icy and slippery.

"It was -5°C at school this morning. When the temperature increases we will aim to make the site safe to open tomorrow.

"Sorry for the inconvenience caused to those families but for everyone’s safety it’s the best decision."

However, some schools will remain open.
