Hilarious approach to classic thriller

Old-fashioned British gung-ho spirit, stiff upper lips and devastatingly beautiful women are said to be very much a feature in the latest adaptation of John Buchan’s classic spy thriller, The 39 Steps.

This award-winning West End theatrical adaptation is due to make its way to the Royal & Derngate next week.

As the story goes, it is during a trip to a theatre that handsome hero Richard Hannay finds himself embroiled in a dastardly plot involving espionage, deception and murder. The tale climaxes with a chase across the wilds of Scotland.

On the run from the police and a deadly spy ring, Hannay no longer knows who he can trust. He must solve the riddle of The 39 Steps to save King and country, and to clear himself of murder.

Patrick Barlow’s adaptation for the stage is based on both the original novel and Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film. His funny Olivier and Tony Award-winning comedy thriller features four actors playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced fun and action.

The Daily Telegraph called the production ‘dizzyingly entertaining,’ while The Guardian described it as ‘uproariously jolly and splendidly inventive.’’

The adventure novel, The 39 Steps, was originally penned by Scottish author John Buchan in 1915.
