Game of Thrones and Brassed Off Tara Fitzgerald appears in Gaslight

Patrick Hamilton’s show will be performed on the Royal stage from Friday October 16 and Saturday November 7.

As the ghostly living room gaslight flickers and the floorboards creak around her, Bella Manningham becomes convinced that she is losing her mind, as her mother did before her. With her husband away on business, she loses all sense of reality.

Does the terror exist in her imagination or are dark secrets living in her home? The surprise arrival of a retired detective leads to a shocking discovery that will shake her respectable Victorian marriage to its core.

Taking the central role of Bella, played by Ingrid Bergman in the iconic film adaptation, is award-winning stage and screen actress Tara Fitzgerald.

Well-known for regular appearances in TV series Waking the Dead and Game of Thrones and her role in the film Brassed Off, Tara’s recent theatre credits include leading roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Almeida and Donmar Warehouse.

Accolades include a New York Drama Desk Award for her role as Ophelia opposite Ralph Fiennes as Hamlet.

This production is directed by Lucy Bailey, whose stagings of Baby Doll, The Postman Always Rings Twice and Dial M For Murder have redefined the art of the theatrical thriller. Other recent productions have included Fortune’s Fool at the Old Vic and Titus Andronicus at Shakespeare’s Globe. Design is by William Dudley whose distinguished career has been recognised by seven Olivier Awards. His credits include the co-production of End of the Rainbow, which opened at Royal & Derngate before transferring to the West End and Broadway.

Lighting Designer Chris Davey worked with Lucy Bailey on her production of Dial M for Murder, winning a TMA Award for Lighting Best Design, an honour he also scooped for Royal & Derngate’s production of Beyond the Horizon (which transferred from Northampton to the National Theatre).

Sound Design is by Mic Pool, Tony Award winner for the Broadway production of The 39 Steps, with recent credits including

The King’s Speech (West End), and original music is being composed by Nell Catchpole, whose work has included the score for Kate Tempest’s Brand New Ancients.

Gaslight is part of Royal & Derngate’s Made in Northampton 2015 season, which has included productions of King John (with Shakespeare’s Globe) and the world premiere of Arthur Miller’s The Hook (with Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse).
