Film fans will have to wait a little longer for a trip to the flicks in Northamptonshire after Cineworld delayed reopening its doors after the lockdown.

The multiplex chain, which has screens at Sixfields in Northampton and at Rushden Lakes, is now targeting July 31 for its big comeback — three weeks later than the July 10 date it planned.

UK cinemas are allowed to open from this weekend as lockdown restrictions are eased.

But release dates for blockbusters Disney's live-action animation remake Mulan and Christopher Nolan's latest thriller Tenet have both been pushed back into August leaving little in the way of new films to show.

Cineworld said in a statement on Tuesday that it was postponing the cinema reopenings "in line with recent adjustments to the schedule of upcoming movie releases".

Screenings will resume with enhanced health and safety measures in place, including contactless payments, sanitisation procedures, new social distancing protocols and seating capacity limits.
