Tchaikovsky’s music will be brought to life this week when Moscow City Ballet arrives at the Royal & Derngate to perform Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker.
These famous ballets are at the very heart of Russian culture and the Moscow City Ballet company and orchestra are famed for their spirited choreography and virtuoso performances.
The Sleeping Beauty ballet tells the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale of the handsome prince who arrives to save the beautiful princess from a wicked ‘sleeping’ curse.
The Nutcracker ballet is also a well-known theatrical piece. Set on Christmas Eve, The Nutcracker is a festive ballet which includes such famous themes as the dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy.
A spokesman said: “Artistic director Victor Smirnov-Govolanov’s version of The Nutcracker ballet is infused with an invigorating freshness that is sure to delight.
“With beautiful costumes and sets, consummate skill and the magical ingredient of Russian soul, this world-class company provides the perfect start to the new year and the ideal introduction to ballet for children.” Sleeping Beauty will be performed from Monday until Wednesday at 7.30pm, with a 2.30pm matinee on Wednesday.
The Nutcracker is staged from Thursday, January 24 to 26, with 7.30pm performances each evening and a 2.30pm matinee on Saturday.
