A COMMUNITY day will celebrate poetry, story-telling and music, as the fourth annual Bardic Picnic comes to Northampton.
The Bardic Picnic 2012 takes place on Sunday from noon until 10pm on the south lawn at Delapre Abbey.
The central part of the day is The Bardic Chair Contest to find the 2012 Bard of Northampton, which aims to find a performer to represent the town for a year and a day, as its ‘bard elect’.
A panel of judges plus the applause of the crowd will determine who will win the title of ‘Bard of Northampton 2012.’
The competition itself will be held throughout the day across three heats, so if you wish to enter, you should attend from 1pm to 9pm.
The contest will be judged by a panel of local dignitaries and spoken word artists.
The winner will be announced on the main stage shortly before the last bard’s performance.
For the first time there will also be Northampton’s Young Bard Contest.
There will be three performance areas, the Main Stage, featuring live music from a variety of Northampton’s talent, including Celtic Pirates, Rozzism and Kismet Hardy.
There is also an Open-Mic Stage and the Storytelling Grove, word-craft workshops, pony and trap rides, children’s area, craft demonstrations and vintage stalls.
There will also be a cafe and bicycle-powered sound system, by ‘The Umbrella Fair on tour’, and licensed Bar by The Labour Club.
This year’s theme is sovereignty and visitors are encouraged to go along dressed in their “regal best”.
