Post Office in Earls Barton to move

A branch will open, on a date yet to be confirmed, in Premier Store in Station Road, where it will open as a modern open-plan “local”-style branch with extended opening hours.

Post Office services will be delivered from a till at the convenience store’s counter.

Services would be provided throughout shop opening hours which are: Monday to Friday 6am to 8pm; Saturday and Sunday 7am to 8pm.

This will be an extra 56 hours and 30 minutes a week of Post Office service including all-day Sunday and Saturday afternoon.

The branch will also open significantly earlier and close much later.

It will also mark an end to lunchtime closing.

The proposed move from The Square, Earls Barton, is with the current postmaster’s agreement.

A Post Office spokesman said: “During public consultation we received a number of comments from customers.

“The majority of the comments were in support of the move, with customers welcoming the proposed longer opening hours, improved access and the retention of Post Office services in Earls Barton.

“Other feedback commented on parking, traffic issues and the availability of space within the proposed store.

“Parking is a problem faced generally in many locations nationwide and is outside our direct control.

“However, we have reviewed the situation and there is roadside parking in close vicinity of the new premises.

“The new branch will be in line with Post Office specifications to ensure sufficient space for the new style local Post Office to operate alongside the retail offer.

“We are working closely with the operator on the internal layout.

“Some fixtures and fittings will be removed or re-aligned for clear access into the premises.

“The entrance, shopping aisles and the queuing area will be kept free from obstructions and adequate room will be provided for customers and a wheelchair to move around the store and access Post Office services.

“Like the current branch, there is a step at the entrance of the new store.

“However, a portable ramp will be available, plus a bell to call for assistance.

“A handrail will also be provided to assist customers in negotiating the step.”
