Hear the golden voice of Paul Carrack at Northampton show

Soul star Paul Carrack is back in Northampton on Friday to headline Royal & Derngate.

Hailed “The Man with the Golden Voice” in the 2012 BBC4 documentary of his career, Carrack’s is the voice behind many significant British pop songs of the past few decades including blue-eyed soul hit How Long by his band Ace, Tempted by Squeeze and Mike and the Mechanics The Living Years.

Diana Ross covered Battlefield which he co-wrote with Nick Lowe, and his other tracks have been recorded by the likes of Tom Jones, Jools Holland and Michael McDonald.

Carrack has toured with Eric Clapton and in May, he will guest with Clapton for three nights at the Royal Albert Hall.

Carrack’s latest solo album, Soul Shadows was released last year and charted higher than any of his other albums to date. His musical empathy as a keyboardist and vocal ability has seen him adapt to vastly different styles during his career.

His versatility saw him turn his vocals to the Great American Songbook for the 2010 album A Different Hat, a collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Paul Carrack headlines the Derngate stage on Friday 10 March at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £31 and £39.

On Sunday, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra returns to the venue as part of Royal & Derngate’s orchestral season, with a concert featuring acclaimed cellist Raphael Wallfisch.

In this concert, conducted by Jac van Steen, the orchestra will begin with Wagner’s Prelude to Act 1, from his Romantic opera Lohengrin.

Cellist Raphael Wallfisch will takes centre stage for a performance of Elgar’s masterpiece, his Cello Concerto.

Closing the concert will be Beethoven’s stirring Symphony No.7.

The concert starts at 7.30pm and concert-goers can hear more from Wallfisch at a pre-concert talk at 6.30pm, hosted by BBC Radio Northampton’s John Griff.
