Starting afresh

It’s a new year and now that all the partying and late nights are out of your system, it’s time to make a new year pledge to look after yourself good and proper in 2012.

So Spree has put together five New Year beauty resolutions that we hope you find easy to follow.

Remove your makeup every night before bed

The fact of the matter is that there are numerous problems that can be caused if you leave your makeup on overnight, especially if you do it on a consistent basis.

We spend so much time and money and effort trying to make ourselves look as good as possible that it seems very odd to let a few extra minutes before bed get in the way of something that can make all the difference in our skin condition and appearance.

One thing that happens is the makeup quite often will clog your pores which will lead to breakouts or increased sensitivity the following day. Also, it can have a very bad effect, especially around the eyes, in drying out the skin. Drying out the skin around the eyes on a consistent basis can lead to premature aging, and nobody wants that do they?

Cleanse, tone and mosturise

No matter what your age or skin type, your skin can be healthier, look younger and feel smoother if you know how to take care of it.

These three simple steps can do just that, cleanse, then tone, then finish with a moisturiser.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ. It keeps much-needed moisture in the body to keep it healthy while keeping dangerous pollutants out, so it’s important to nourish your skin as much as the rest of your body.

Cleansing your skin removes any dirt, oil and impurities that can clog your pores, while using a toner can control any breakouts, blemishes and shine, plus it prepares skin for moisturising.

Once your face is clean, protect it with a moisturiser.

A good moisturiser will absorb into your skin and protect your skin cells to help keep your skin, soft, smooth and youthful.

Exfoliate regularly

Skin is renewing itself all the time, and so we can often end up with dead, dry skin cells on our body.

These can be removed in a flash if you exfoliate on a regular basis.

Get yourself a nice body scrub and aim to exfoliate with it no more than once a week, you don’t want to exfoliate all the time as that can be too harsh on your skin.

Exfoliating is also a must before applying any fake tan or going for a spray tan, as the colour can often gather around any dry, rough patches of skin, making it look patchy.

Drink plenty of water

You don’t need an expensive product to complete this new year resolution, just a nice, cold tap or water cooler.

Drinking plenty of water flushes the toxins out of your body and keep skin looking soft, supple and healthy.

On average 45 to 70 per cent of a person’s total body weight is made up of water, so it is vital to keep fluid levels topped up.

A simple way to check whether your body is getting the fluid it needs to function efficiently, is to keep an eye on the colour of your urine. The clearer it is, the more hydrated you are.

You should aim for around two litres of water a day.

Keep your hair conditioned

It’s all well and good washing your hair, but clean hair is only the start of it. The way many of us tease our tresses into the latest styles, not to mention using hair appliances on them such as hair dryers, curling tongs and straighteners, our hair needs to be kept in good condition too.

Conditioners can restore moisture to your hair, which is often lost during the styling process, and help reduce the amount of split or dead ends you get.

If you want a more intensive treatment, once a week, apply a hair mask, which are even deeper conditioning than a normal conditioner, meaning hair is soft and supple and if you have coloured hair, it helps maintain that colour for longer.
