SURPRISE MOVE - former Saints hooker Brett Sharman has signed for Bath

Bath have announced the surprise loan signing of hooker Brett Sharman, who was released by Saints just four weeks ago due to a ‘long-standing knee injury’.

Sharman has been drafted in on a short-term deal to act as cover for first-choice No.2 Rob Webber.

The South African had been embroiled in a Twitter controversy towards the end of his Saints career after posting a racist comment about Team GB Olympic hero Mo Farah.

Sharman later removed it and apologised, before deleting his account on the social networking site.

Saints later released the 25-year-old, citing the knee problem and claiming there was ‘no immediate prospect of Sharman returning to full fitness’.

Northampton director of rugby Jim Mallinder said at the time: “It is always a shame when someone’s contract comes to an end in these circumstances.

“Brett has contributed a lot to the squad in his time at Franklin’s Gardens and we wish him all the best for the future.”

Sharman added: “I’ve enjoyed my time at the Saints. It is a great club with good people and I am sure that there will be major success coming to Franklin’s Gardens sooner rather than later.

“The players, management and supporters all deserve that and I wish them every success.”

But Sharman, who is still being investigated by the police for the tweet about Farah, could now get another crack at the Premiership with Bath.
