Saints lock Christian Day has been called up to the England senior squad as injury cover for Leicester’s Geoff Parling.

Day had initially been named in the Saxons group to take on Ireland Wolfhounds in Cork on Friday, but has now been given a promotion.

Parling suffered a knee injury in Leicester’s defeat to Ulster on Saturday and is being assessed by the England medical team.

That is also the case for flanker Tom Wood, who was forced off with an ankle injury in the 43rd minute of Saints’ defeat to Racing Metro.

Wood was sent for an MRI scan on Monday afternoon and England are awaiting the results, with Leicester’s Tom Croft drafted in as cover.

Luther Burrell is another who has been struck by injury with the concussion he sustained in the Racing loss meaning he must undergo the graduated return to play protocol.

The Saints centre is hoping to return to training on Friday, with England’s Six Nations opener in Wales a week later.
