Jim Mallinder says Saints ‘embarrassed’ themselves in the 39-17 defeat at London Irish.
The Premiership table-toppers were slayed by the strugglers at the Madejski Stadium, conceding four tries on their way to defeat.
Late scores from Ken Pisi and Phil Dowson ultimately meant little as Saints left Reading with their tails between their legs and their 100 per cent start to the season in tatters.
Mallinder wasn’t holding back in his analysis of the match – and he felt a lack of mental preparation cost his men dear.
“We were well beaten,” he said. “There are a lot of good sides in the Premiership and you’ve got to turn up on the day and you’ve got to front up.
“There was no intensity there from us and just about everything we did in that first 60 minutes was awful.
“We talked a lot in the week about what we needed to do and we didn’t do any of that today.
“Mentally, if you underestimate any team in the Premiership then you will get turned over. Mentally we weren’t up for today’s game, and I think that showed.
And he added: “As a group we are all very disappointed. We embarrassed ourselves as a group today.”
