Jim Mallinder hailed milestone men Courtney Lawes and Tom Wood after Saints’ success against Harlequins.

Lawes led the team out on his 150th appearance for the club and claimed the man of the match award after propelling Saints to a 17-13 win at Franklin’s Gardens.

Wood came off the bench to reach a century of appearances in Northampton colours, and celebrated the achievement with a try.

Both players were getting their first game time after spells out with ankle injuries, and Mallinder was delighted with the England duo.

“We’re building experience in terms of personnel in the squad and for Courtney to get 150, for Tom Wood to get 100 is brilliant,” said the Saints boss.

“It was pleasing to see them back after injury. They played well.

“Courtney got man of the match and it’s good for the club. We’ve got good strength in depth now.

“We put in a good performance last week and we’ve just added a few more players to that as well.”

Saints stretched their lead at the top of the Aviva Premiership to 13 points, with tries from Samu Manoa, James Wilson and Wood getting the job done at the Gardens.

But Quins had their moments, claiming a late losing bonus point thanks to a Marland Yarde try.

And Mallinder said: “They made us work for 80 minutes and they played well.

“They did a good job on our lineout, they disrupted that and we never really got too much tempo in our game.

“We had to work hard for the win, but we did it and our maul got us some good tries there.

“It was another very good defensive display.”
