Kahn Fotuali’i paid tribute to Saints’ super subs after Friday night’s win at Harlequins.

The Samoan scrum-half made his first start for Northampton as they recorded a determined 13-6 win at The Stoop.

It was a monumental effort from Jim Mallinder’s men, who toughed it out to record their first victory on Quins turf since September, 2010.

Fotuali’i, who came off on 58 minutes for Lee Dickson, felt the strength on the Saints bench was the key.

And he was happy to hail the players who came on to ensure James Wilson’s 63rd-minute score was the match-winner.

“It’s pretty exciting being named in the starting team and it’s always good to have a win,” said Fotuali’i, a high-profile summer recruit from Ospreys.

“From what I’ve heard it’s always tough to come here, Harlequins are a quality side and top-four contenders, especially in these conditions, it could have gone either way.

“Credit to our boys and the bench who came on really stood up and gave that impact that we needed.”
