Former Saint James Downey’s decision to move back to his native Ireland appears to have paid off after he was handed an international call-up.

Uncapped centre Downey spent five successful years at Franklin’s Gardens before returning to former club Munster during the summer.

The 31-year-old has impressed in the Thomond Park side’s start to the PRO12 season and has done enough to draw the attention of Ireland boss Declan Kidney.

Downey has been named in a 33-man two-day training squad, replacing Gordon D’Arcy, who is sidelined with a rib injury.
