Wellingborough’s Ryan Evans made a solid start to the season in the Portuguese International Amateur Championships as he made the cut on his way to finishing as the fifth highest placed Englishman.
The plus-three handicapper began the prestigious tournament brightly as he bagged five birdies in his last eight holes during an opening three-under-par 69 to sit just one off the lead.
Despite carding three birdies in the first four holes on day two, the five-time County Matchplay champion couldn’t maintain his momentum as he slipped back with a 73.
Although Evans had three sixes in a third round 78, he completed his last 10 holes on the final day in two-under-par as he finished with a 73 to grab a share of 35th place.
The event was won by German Moritz Lampert, who carded an eagle and an albatross during a seven-under-par third round of 65 as he went on to finish two clear of the field.
