Caitlin McClatchey’s hopes of claiming an Olympic medal were dashed tonight as she came home seventh in the 200m freestyle final in London.

McClatchey, who was brought up in Brixworth and is a product of the Northampton Swimming Club, put in a spirited display but the quality of the opposition was just too good.

McClatchey, who qualified as sixth fastest for the final, clocked a time of 1:57.60

The race was won by American Allison Schmitt in an Olympic record time 1:53.61.
